Tamaraw Strength for OMSC’s University Bid!

Events June 05, 2024

Republic Act 11587, the law converting Occidental Mindoro State College (OMSC) into Occidental Mindoro State University (OMSU) was signed on On July 30, 2021. This goal is a testament of the institution’s dedication to educational excellence and a significant milestone for the entire Occidental Mindoro community.  The recent visit by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Composite team marks a pivotal step in this journey, placed OMSC on the cusp of a transformative journey as it moves closer to achieving university status.

The drive towards university status is reflective of the same perseverance and strength of the tamaraw.  The tamaraw is endemic to the island of Mindoro and is a powerful symbol of resilience and determination. It signifies OMSC’s resolve to provide enhanced educational opportunities and to contribute significantly to the sustainable development of Occidental Mindoro. Much like this animal, OMSC has shown an unwavering commitment to overcoming challenges and pursuing excellence.

The law requires that OMSC will comply with the requirements of the Commission to be fully converted into a university. The CHED Composite team’s visit is a critical procedural necessity of the rigorous evaluation process required for OMSC’s elevation to university status. It is a recognition of the substantial progress OMSC has made over the years. The team’s assessment considered various factors, including academic programs, faculty qualifications, research capabilities, infrastructure, and community engagement. The findings during the visit are the manifestation of the efforts of OMSC.

Achieving university status will allow OMSC to have broader academic offerings, including more graduate and postgraduate programs. This expansion would not only cater to the educational needs of local students but also attract learners from other regions, promoting cultural and intellectual diversity. Moreover, university status would enhance OMSC’s ability to engage in advanced research, fostering innovation and development in various fields. This would directly contribute to the socio-economic growth of Occidental Mindoro, aligning with sustainable development goals. Enhanced research capabilities would also enable the institution to address local issues more effectively, from agricultural advancements to environmental conservation, further benefiting the community.

One can see how OMSC’s bid for university status is intrinsically linked to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations. These goals provide a blueprint for achieving a better and more sustainable future for all. Here’s how OMSC’s transformation into a university aligns with these global objectives:

The journey to universityhood is a collective endeavor that requires the support of the entire community. Faculty, students, alumni, local government units, and residents all play a crucial role in this transformative process. Their continued support and active participation are vital in meeting the remaining requirements and demonstrating the institution’s readiness for this significant change.

Community support can manifest in various ways, such as participating in public consultations, contributing to development projects, and advocating for the institution’s goals. The collaboration between OMSC and the community is essential in showcasing a unified front to CHED and other accrediting bodies.

OMSC’s bid for university status is more than an institutional ambition; it is a community-wide aspiration that promises to bring lasting benefits to Occidental Mindoro. The visit from the CHED Composite team is a momentous step in this ongoing journey, highlighting the institution’s progress and potential. Like the tamaraw, OMSC embodies resilience and strength, qualities that will undoubtedly see it through to achieving its goal.

As we support OMSC in its pursuit of educational excellence, let us remember that this journey is a shared one. The transformation of OMSC into a university is not just about expanding its academic horizons; it is about empowering our community, fostering sustainable development, and creating a brighter future for all.
